Getting Fitted for a Prosthetic Limb: A First-Timer's Guide
If you or a family member is facing limb loss or already living with limb difference, the idea of getting fitted for a prosthetic can feel overwhelming. Here's what the process actually looks like, step by step.
1. Initial consultation
This is where our team assesses the residual limb — its shape, length, skin condition, and healing stage — and talks through your daily needs: walking, standing, specific activities, and any comfort concerns from previous devices if this isn't your first prosthetic.
2. Measuring and casting
A cast or digital scan of the limb is taken to build a socket that fits your exact shape. This step matters most for comfort — a well-fitted socket is the difference between a prosthetic you can wear all day and one that causes pain within an hour.
3. Building the device
Depending on your needs, this could be a below-knee or above-knee prosthetic, or an AFO (Ankle-Foot Orthosis) for those who need support rather than full limb replacement. Cosmetic covering options are available for a more natural appearance.
4. Fitting and adjustment
The first fitting is rarely the final one. Expect follow-up visits to adjust pressure points, alignment, and comfort as you start walking and moving with the device — your body needs time to adapt, and so does the socket.
5. Ongoing care
Residual limbs change shape over time, especially in the months after amputation. Periodic check-ins with your technician keep the fit accurate as that happens.
What to expect emotionally
It's normal for this process to take patience — both physically adjusting to a new device and mentally adjusting to a new normal. Our technicians work with patients of all ages, from first-time amputees to those replacing an older device.
